Freedom’s Purchase, a historical novel of 83,000 words, combines an immigrant saga with the uniquely American conflict of Abolition and the Civil War.
The Story: ANDERS and MARIA, recently arrived from Norway, struggle to farm the Illinois prairie. They accept the challenge of Underground Railroad operations in order to aid the flight of a determined young African American slave named DANIEL.
The epic plot, unveiled from multiple points of view, highlights the varied meanings that people attach to freedom and the varied prices they must pay to purchase it in the roiling world of the mid-1800s.
This story, suggested by the history of my own family, goes to the heart of our nation’s troubled past.
The Future of Freedom’s Purchase: The manuscript is now undergoing a tooth-to-tail revision to make it a better book.
