Freedom’s Purchase is an unpublished historical novel of 85,000 words, now nearing the end of a tooth-to-tail revision.
The Story: Maria loves the handsome, carefree Anders. When Anders, fleeing drudgery on his uncle’s farm, ships from Norway for the New World, strong-willed Maria pursues him across the sea. After a year of prairie hardships in a land of English-speaking strangers, they marry and start a farm. Neither imagines that slavery will affect them as immigrant farmers, but when a fugitive slave lands on their Illinois doorstep, the young Norwegians are swept into a fight they did not seek, but cannot avoid.
The Future of Freedom’s Purchase: Early in 2020, when the manuscript is fully revised, I will seek representation, looking toward a traditional contract with a respected publisher.
